HOW BIG DO GIANT SNAKEHEAD GROW IN MALAYSIA?
Giant snakehead can grow to impressive sizes in Malaysia. Fish exceeding 10 kg and measuring more than 1 metre in length have been caught in waters across the country.
A typical adult giant snakehead caught while sport fishing is usually around 4–7 kg, although size varies depending on the location, habitat and food availability.
Even at these average sizes, giant snakehead are extremely powerful fish and are known for their hard strikes and strong runs.

Good giant snakehead fishing can be found in large reservoirs, lakes and river systems across Peninsular Malaysia.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO FISH FOR GIANT SNAKEHEAD IN MALAYSIA?
Giant snakehead can be caught throughout the year, but fishing conditions can change depending on rainfall, water level, temperature and breeding activity.
Stable water levels often make it easier to locate fish, while periods of breeding activity can create excellent opportunities for sight-fishing.
There is no single best month for every location in Malaysia, so local conditions are usually more important than the calendar.
HOW DO YOU FISH FOR GIANT SNAKEHEAD?
One of the most exciting methods is sight-fishing.
Giant snakehead regularly rise to the surface to breathe air. Anglers watch for the fish to roll or surface, then cast a lure ahead of its direction of travel.
During breeding periods, adult fish may also be found guarding schools of young fry, creating another opportunity for carefully presented casts.
WHY DO GIANT SNAKEHEAD COME TO THE SURFACE?
Giant snakehead are air-breathing fish.
They regularly rise to the surface to gulp atmospheric air, which allows anglers to locate them visually before making a cast.

WHAT LURES WORK BEST FOR GIANT SNAKEHEAD?
Many lures used for bass fishing and pike fishing also work very well for giant snakehead.
Effective choices include topwater lures, frogs, jerkbaits, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, swimbaits and soft plastics. The best lure depends on the location, water conditions and how the fish are behaving.
Because giant snakehead have very powerful jaws, we strongly recommend using upgraded hooks and heavy-duty split rings, especially on hardbaits. Standard factory hardware on lighter bass lures may not always be strong enough for larger fish.
WHAT TACKLE SHOULD I USE FOR GIANT SNAKEHEAD?
Medium-heavy tackle is generally recommended.
Giant snakehead are powerful fish with strong jaws and are often found around timber, vegetation and other heavy structure.
A strong braided main line, abrasion-resistant leader and a reel with a reliable drag are important when fishing for larger toman.
DO I NEED TO BRING MY OWN FISHING GEAR?
No. Reliable rods, reels and suitable lures are provided during our guided trips.
You are also welcome to bring your own tackle if you prefer using your own setup.
IS GIANT SNAKEHEAD FISHING SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS?
Yes. Beginners can fish for giant snakehead, although the techniques can be more challenging than some other types of freshwater fishing.
We help with casting, lure selection, reading surface movements, timing the cast and fighting the fish.
DO GIANT SNAKEHEAD FIGHT HARD?
Yes. Giant snakehead are among the hardest-fighting freshwater fish in Malaysia.
They are known for explosive strikes, powerful runs and sudden dives into structure. Even relatively small fish can put heavy pressure on tackle.
ARE GIANT SNAKEHEAD DANGEROUS?
Giant snakehead are not dangerous to anglers in the water, but they have strong jaws and sharp teeth.
Fish should be handled carefully, especially when removing hooks.

Giant snakehead can survive out of water for a period of time because they can breathe atmospheric air.
However, fish should still be handled quickly and returned to the water as soon as possible to reduce stress.
DO GIANT SNAKEHEAD GUARD THEIR YOUNG?
Yes. Giant snakehead are known for strong parental care.
Adults may guard schools of fry for several weeks, and the young fish can often be seen moving together near the surface.
This behaviour can make breeding fish easier to locate, but careful fish handling is especially important during this period.
DO I NEED A FISHING LICENCE IN MALAYSIA?
For most of our fishing locations, no fishing licence is required.
The main exception is Royal Belum, where a permit is required to enter and fish within the protected area. We will arrange the necessary permit as part of the trip.
HOW MANY ANGLERS CAN FISH ON ONE BOAT?
Most of our boats are designed for one or two anglers.
We limit the number of anglers for safety, comfort and casting space, especially because giant snakehead fishing often requires quick and accurate casts.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING FOR A GIANT SNAKEHEAD FISHING TRIP?
Malaysia has a hot and humid tropical climate, so lightweight and quick-drying clothing is recommended.
Long sleeves, long pants, a hat or cap, sunglasses and sunscreen are useful for sun protection.
A light rain jacket is also recommended, as tropical showers can occur throughout the year.
Fishing tackle and lures are provided, so you only need to bring your own equipment if you prefer to use it.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR FOR SNAKEHEAD FISHING IN MALAYSIA?
Lightweight, breathable and quick-drying clothing is ideal.
Polarized sunglasses are highly recommended because they reduce glare and help when watching for fish, fry schools and surface movement.
IS IT SAFE TO GO GIANT SNAKEHEAD FISHING IN MALAYSIA?
Yes. Snakehead fishing in Malaysia is generally very safe. Most of our fishing locations are not remote and are within easy reach of nearby towns or cities.
Malaysia also has a relatively low crime rate in the areas where we operate and a stable political environment, making it a comfortable destination for visiting anglers.
The lakes we fish for snakeheads do not have crocodiles, and life jackets are always provided on our boats.
Weather conditions are monitored throughout the trip. Fishing will be stopped or postponed during thunderstorms, strong winds or other unsafe weather conditions.
Safety is always a priority from the start of the trip until everyone returns safely.
WHAT HAPPENS IF IT RAINS?
Fishing normally continues during light or moderate rain.
However, fishing will be stopped temporarily during thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds or other unsafe conditions.
HOW LONG IS A TYPICAL GIANT SNAKEHEAD FISHING TRIP?
Trip duration depends on the destination.
Some locations can be fished as a full-day trip, while more distant locations are better suited to 2-day or multi-day trips.
CAN I COMBINE GIANT SNAKEHEAD AND PEACOCK BASS FISHING IN THE SAME TRIP?
Yes, at selected destinations.
Some lakes have both giant snakehead and peacock bass, making it possible to target both species during the same trip.
Other destinations are better suited specifically to giant snakehead.
CAN YOU ARRANGE TRANSPORTATION FROM KUALA LUMPUR?
Yes. Transportation is provided for all fishing trips outside Kuala Lumpur, with pickup and return from Kuala Lumpur included as part of the trip arrangement.
For selected northern fishing destinations, pickup from Penang can also be arranged, which is convenient for international anglers flying into Penang International Airport.
